ASF contingency planning: Workshop in a box

This set of materials contains everything you need to hold an African swine fever (ASF) contingency planning workshop.

The goal of the workshop should be to establish what would happen if there was an ASF outbreak and help participants prepare.

Attendees should go away with a clear understanding of what would happen if there was an outbreak, as well as a series of actions bespoke to their own unit or situation.

This could include:

• Updating or rewriting contingency plans to reflect the current unit layout, staffing levels and procedures
• Reviewing site access so it can be better controlled and/or simplified
• Updating records and making them digital where possible
• A clear plan for working with their staff and vet to ensure all records and plans are kept up to date

• A how-to guide for preparing for and setting up a workshop
• A deck of slides with comprehensive notes providing background information about ASF
• A recording of AHDB and Livetec delivering the presentations – use this to help you prepare for your workshop
• A frequently asked questions (FAQ) document
• A glossary of relevant acronyms
• A copy of the NPA–AHDB contingency planning template
• A link to the Farm Animal Genetic Resources Committee (FAnGR) guidelines on developing a contingency plan for breeds at risk
• A how-to guide for creating aerial maps of individual units
• A how-to guide for creating anonymous questionnaires for in-session feedback
• Map keys (legends) for marking up unit maps
• Example marked-up maps for fictional indoor and outdoor units
