The UK Cereal Pathogen Virulence Survey (UKCPVS) has monitored cereal rusts and mildews in the UK for over 50 years (since 1967), detecting and warning industry and growers of new races of disease emerging on resistant varieties.

Managed by NIAB and funded by AHDB and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), UKCPVS receives infected cereal leaf samples from agronomists, trials officers and researchers.

From these samples, pathogen isolates are selected and tested to check their virulence against wheat and barley varieties.

The testing can detect new races of cereal pathogens capable of causing disease on previously resistant cereal varieties.

Targeted at breeders, crop scientists and technical agronomists, the stakeholder event reported on the latest UKCPVS results.

It also featured additional pathology papers that look at cereal diseases from a national and international perspective.

Visit the UKCPVS home page for project information, including reports and previous events.
