About Limavady Monitor Farm

Limavady Monitor Farm: 2022–2025:

  • 120 ha sandy loam soils reclaimed from Lough Foyle
  • 80 ha of clay loam soil
  • 50/50 split of dairy cows and cereals

Challenge: Limavady Monitor Farm set out to strengthen long-term farm resilience by reducing reliance on conventional inputs, improving soil condition and supporting practical succession planning.

Approach: Alistair Craig adopted a progressive regenerative farming approach, moving to min-till and no-till systems, diversifying the crop rotation, removing insecticides and reducing fungicides, herbicides, fertilisers and PGRs. The farm also trialled biological inputs, including LAB, BAM and milk, while creating opportunities for knowledge exchange with like-minded farmers.

Impact: The Monitor Farm has shown how regenerative practice can reduce input dependency, improve soil-focused decision-making and build confidence across the farming network. The changes delivered a significant reduction in input costs, particularly organic fertilisers, while supporting a more resilient and collaborative approach to future farm management.
