New AHDB Strategic Cereal Farm launches in the south

With the summer event season fast approaching, AHDB has a new strategic farm and a full schedule of open days and farm walks in the south.

The launch of AHDB’s Strategic Farm South, hosted by David Miller at Folly Farm near Basingstoke will start a 6-year programme looking at elements of regenerative farming, what steps can be taken towards building the system and a what works best practice approach.

Philip Dolbear, AHDB’s regional Knowledge Exchange Manager said, “We are delighted to be working with David looking at the science and economics of how his farm system has developed and exploring new techniques, systems and products to develop it further”.

Strategic farmer, David Miller said, "We have come a long way learning through trial and error, but this is a great programme putting some detailed trials in place to identify key markers and actions towards managing the soil and crops to farm more sympathetically with the environment while achieving the same or even better margins.”

Following on from this are the Monitor Farm Summer events including the concluding meeting of the Taunton programme and the launch of the new Cheltenham Monitor Farm.

Of particular interest at these meetings are the progress reports and outcomes of various farm trials looking at fertiliser products, nitrogen use efficiency and different cultivation strategies to list a few.

AHDB’s demonstration farms in Philip’s area include the Saltash Monitor Farm (hosted by Ashley Jones), Salisbury Monitor Farm (hosted by Ben Jeans), Cheltenham Monitor Farm (hosted by Andrew Walters) and Strategic Cereal Farm South (hosted by David Miller).
