Cereal exports target market reports

Produced for the main UK export markets, these reports include information on demographics, economics, the structure of the market, consumer trends and supply and demand.

Domestic production has improved over the years, although it remains weather-driven and does not meet domestic demand. Therefore, Algeria continues to import wheat.

Import demand for wheat is at 3–4 Mt, of which two-thirds are imported by state-owned mills and one-third by private mills.

Wheat import requirements in the 2019/20 marketing year (July/June) are forecast at 4.8 Mt, and barley imports at 1.2 Mt. European Union and Black Sea countries supply most of the common ‘soft’ wheat, while Canada is the traditional supplier of ‘durum’ wheat.

The majority of Portugal’s 1.2 Mt of wheat is sourced from France, followed by Bulgaria and smaller quantities from UK, Germany and Spain.

Wheat import requirements in the 2019/20 marketing year (July/June) are forecast at 6.2 Mt, and barley imports at 1.2 Mt. France, Bulgaria and Romania supply most of the common wheat, while the majority of Spain’s barley imports are supplied by France and the UK.
