Dairy housing
Dairy housing should meet the spatial and behavioural needs of both calves and cows. Housing design and management can affect cow health and welfare, influencing conditions such as pneumonia, lameness and mastitis. This page links to our guidance on dairy housing, including web pages, publications and webinars.
Dairy cow housing: Cubicles
Cubicle design has a big impact on cow welfare. Lying time is closely linked to lameness and cow comfort, so getting the design, layout and dimensions of the cubicles right for your cows is very important.
Housing for dry cows
Dry cow accommodation must be managed and maintained to the same high standard as housing for milking cows. Good design and maintenance help reduce the risk of injury and bacterial colonisation to the teats and udder. Consider ventilation, loafing and feeding areas, as well as scraping and slurry removal.
Calf and youngstock housing
Calves and youngstock are the future of your farm. Investing in them is an investment in the farm’s future, too. Whether building a new calf housing unit or improving your current one, consider factors such as temperature, ventilation, ease of use and system cost.
