Another weekly rise for GB pig prices

Wednesday, 14 July 2021

By Bethan Wilkins

The EU-spec SPP continued to climb in the week ended 10 July, gaining 0.92p to average 159.88p/kg. The current quote is the highest since last September, but still around 5.5p lower than the same point last year. Robust domestic demand at retail level has helped support the British price, while live pig supplies have declined compared to earlier in the year. The ongoing price rises come despite recent weakening in the EU pig market and a declining outlook for Asian demand.

Estimated slaughter fell by 2% on the previous week to 175,100 head. This was still 2% higher than last year. Slaughter has now been above year earlier levels for 21 consecutive weeks, but the annual growth has narrowed recently. This week’s slaughter estimate was also the lowest since January, indicating the lower supplies currently available. The average carcase weight was similar to the previous week (+0.09kg) at 86.13kg, which is 1.13kg higher than this point last year.

The EU-spec APP also increased again in the week ended 3 July, rising by 1.49p to 163.47p/kg. This widened the gap between the APP and the SPP to 4.51p, which is the widest gap since March.
