China reduces dairy import tariffs

China has announced that it is reducing import tariffs on a range of agricultural products. On the dairy side, the reductions include whey and most cheese, except for fresh cheese and curds.
The UK exported 8,250 tonnes of product under these codes for January-November 2019, worth just over £15million. This equates to a 20% increase in volume exported compared to Jan-Nov 2018, but an 86% increase in value.
The value increase has partly come from an increase in the whey price, with the £/tonne value more than doubling between 2018 and 2019. Most of the volume growth has come from increased exports of cheese. As the more expensive product, this has also pushed up the total value.
The lowering of tariffs on these goods should encourage continued growth in 2020.
