GB milk deliveries: December production volumes continued upwards

Thursday, 15 January 2026

GB milk deliveries in December totalled 1,103 million litres, up 4.8% compared to the same period in 2024. Deliveries averaged 35.6 million litres per day.

GB milk volumes continue to soar above last year’s levels, building on growth seen since Autumn 2024. December volumes were 6.9% above the 5-year average for the month’s production.

For this year’s milk season so far (April–December), volumes totalled 9,834 million litres, an impressive 5.4% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

The growth has been supported by favourable dairy economics and increased usage of cheap concentrate feeds.

More recently, processors have dropped prices paid to producers, with further price cuts announced for early 2026 but these have not yet been felt in the pocket.

Recovery to prices is not expected to be quick, as the abundance of milk domestically and globally is likely to continue for some time.

GB milk production for the 2025/26 season is forecast to record a new high of 13.05 bn litres, 4.9% more than the previous milk year according to the December forecast update.

As the spring flush approaches, milk dumping concerns heighten as processing capacity is likely to be pressured further.

How quickly can the oversupply situation rebalance? With cull cow prices still strong, we could see increased culling but this has not happened in significant amounts yet.

Very high fat and protein levels in the milk, and seasonality bonuses, are softening some of the impact of headline milk price declines.
