Prices fall at latest GDT event but still remain at historic highs
Thursday, 23 June 2022
Prices on the New-Zealand based Global Dairy Trade (GDT) platform have been steadily decreasing since peaking at US$5,065 on 1 March, with a small uptick at the beginning of June. The latest event on 21 June saw the overall price index decline again by 1.3% to US$4,600, with a total of 20,760 tonnes of product sold. Butter and SMP were the only products to see an increase in price with a 2.4% and 1.0% rise respectively, all other products were in decline.
The quantity of product sold at recent events are behind the volumes of last season, down 3.5% at the latest event compared to the same point last year, reiterating the tightness in current supplies of milk and dairy products. These tight supplies are supporting prices and although recently prices have been dropping off they still remain above historic levels, with the overall price index at the latest event over US$500 higher than at the same time last year.
