The UK pig sector has paid tribute to the late Robert Beckett, who has been posthumously awarded the distinguished David Black Award at this year’s National Pig Awards.

The award recognises individuals whose leadership and dedication have made a meaningful contribution to the British pig industry.

Robert joined Yorkwold in 2001 and went on to lead its indoor breed-to-finish enterprise as managing director. Over more than two decades, he built a reputation for clear leadership, high welfare standards and constructive collaboration.

His influence extended far beyond his own business. Robert served on the AHDB Pork Sector Council, the Pig Health and Welfare Council’s welfare committee and several other groups, where his practical insight and willingness to ask challenging questions helped shape industry progress.

For Robert’s wife Andrea and their children, Ollie and Grace, the honour is deeply significant:

“Ollie, Grace and I are delighted and very proud to receive the David Black Award on Bob’s behalf. As a family, we are all aware of the commitment, hard work and support Bob gave to the pig industry.

“His dedication was evident throughout his career, in particular working for Yorkwold for 24 years and the various committees and councils he contributed to.

“He was always one who challenged, never seeking praise or reward. He worked almost to the end, his passion and drive hardly wavering even though his health was.

“Thank you to all those who nominated Bob for this award and to everyone he worked alongside throughout the industry. You were not only colleagues, you were his friends. He will be missed greatly by us all.”

As one of the pig sector’s most respected honours, the David Black Award recognises those whose work has strengthened the industry. Robert’s inclusion reflects both his professional achievements and the personal integrity he brought to every role.

Mark Haighton, AHDB Pork Sector Director, also paid tribute:

“Robert exemplified the values behind the David Black Award. His leadership and integrity were evident in everything he undertook, and his contributions helped steer important conversations within the industry.

His influence extended well beyond his own business, and it is a privilege for AHDB to recognise his legacy.”
