UK grows global butter exports

UK butter exports to markets outside of the EU have seen strong growth this year, particularly in the past few months. Total shipments to non-EU markets have reached 5,442 tonnes so far this year (Jan-Oct), up 1,700 tonnes (45%) year on year.
UK butter prices have been at a discount to global values since April 2019, which has provided exporters with a competitive advantage in securing sales. This has been particularly evident in markets such as China and Canada where the US has lost sales volumes to more competitively priced sources, including the UK.
Sales to the US may see a reduction in the coming months however, as the imposition of a 25% tariffs on butter imports will close the current gap between US and UK prices.
