Summer meeting and farm walk: Brigg

Join Colin Chappell for a farm walk and a review of the year at Brigg Monitor Farm.

This meeting will focus on how to achieve consistent yields in oilseed rape. In particular given the challenges in growing this crop we ask whether you should be growing it at all and what alternatives there are.

Our guest farmer speaker for the meeting will be North Yorkshire grower Stephen Tuer. He will explain his approach to growing oilseed rape and how he has adapted his farming system to overcome challenging conditions.

The latter part of the meeting will involve a farm walk looking at a variety of topics including: different approaches to drilling, thoughts on last autumn’s cover crops and their effects on soil health.

About the farm

Colin Chappell farms with his family at Gander Farm near Brigg, Lincolnshire. The lowland mixed arable and beef unit has 615 ha combinable crops and 32 ha permanent pasture. Colin’s arable rotation is normally peas or oilseed rape, followed by two wheats. He recently replaced his second wheats either with spring wheat due to black-grass pressure, or maize on lighter land for a local AD plant. During the three years of the programme Colin hopes to look at succession, joint venture farming and how his farm can survive in a post-EU Britain.
