Feed value of multispecies and clover-based swards
Multispecies and clover-based swards are gaining recognition for their high animal feed value, strong seasonal growth and positive impact on livestock health. Each group plays a distinct role in boosting forage quality.
Grasses
Grasses provide most of the dry matter (DM) and metabolisable energy (ME). These typically include perennial ryegrass, timothy, cocksfoot and meadow fescue.
Selecting the right mix – such as high-sugar ryegrasses for energy, deep-rooting cocksfoot for drought tolerance, or meadow fescue for mid-summer growth helps ensure reliable productivity and good feed value throughout the season.
Legumes
These typically include white clover, red clover and lucerne (less persistent under grazing in UK conditions) . They enhance the crude protein content, improve taste, and support soil nitrogen cycling – reducing the need for artificial fertilisers.
Herbs
These typically include chicory and plantain. They contribute valuable minerals, support gut health and offer moderate protein levels. Their deep roots also improve drought resilience and extend grazing availability during dry periods.
