What is mob grazing?

Mob grazing involves grazing livestock at very high stocking densities for a short period – often less than one day – before moving them on to fresh pasture. As livestock trample plant material into the soil surface, it builds organic matter.

The grazed area is then rested for an extended period (typically 60–120 days or more), allowing full plant recovery and deep rooting.

This method is usually implemented with temporary electric fencing and requires close observation and planning.

Key principles

High stocking density: Typically, 100,000 kg liveweight/ha or more, e.g. 100 cows, on 1 ha for 24 hours, and adjusted to match grass availability and sward type.

Short grazing duration: Move animals daily or multiple times per day using electric fencing to tightly control the grazing area.

Long rest periods: A minimum of 60 days, ideally 100 or more, depending on the season and growth. Avoid re-grazing before plants have fully recovered, i.e. 3–4-leaf stage for grasses.

Residual cover: Leave 30–50% of the plant mass ungrazed and trampled; this acts as ground cover, protects the soil and feeds soil microbes.

Flexible paddocks: Strip grazing with temporary fencing is common, with back fencing used to prevent re-grazing of recovering plants.

Implementing mob grazing

Before changing your grazing practices, trial mob grazing on a small area or with a single group of cattle to make sure that it’s suitable for your system.

Consider rotational grazing as a starting point if you’re new to managed grazing and adapt the system gradually.

Use a plate meter or sward stick to monitor covers and adjust grazing plans, and build in flexibility for wet periods – have a sacrifice area or adjust moves.

Monitor animal condition closely, especially in transition periods, and adapt grazing accordingly.
