Tips to improve big bale silage quality

Making high-quality bale silage requires good timing, careful handling and close attention to detail. Use these tips to get the best results from your forage.

Plan for the right cutting date

Timing is critical for silage quality. Plan your cutting date based on the forage quality you want and agree this with your contractor early so you’re ready when conditions are suitable.

Make sure you’re prepared for weather variations by considering options for both early and late cuts.

Manage fertiliser and slurry use

Apply fertiliser and slurry in good time to allow their effects to manifest before cutting.

Too much nitrogen can reduce silage quality, so make sure it’s applied according to the specific crop's needs and with enough time for it to be absorbed.

Proper nutrient management can boost forage quality, reducing the reliance on external feed inputs.

Set the right mowing height

The mowing height plays a critical role in both silage quality and regrowth.

Cutting too low can lead to soil contamination, reduce forage quality and delay regrowth.

Aim to cut at the optimal height for the specific species you're harvesting, typically around 5–7 cm above ground level to balance quality and regrowth.

Wilt quickly and evenly

Efficient wilting helps preserve the nutrients in the forage.

When conditions allow, use a spreader mower or ted immediately after mowing to dry it faster.

Be mindful of soil conditions during harvest to avoid contamination. Aim for a dry matter (DM) content of 30 to 35%.

Improve bale density

Dense bales ferment more efficiently and are less prone to spoilage.

Chopping forage can help improve packing and create a more uniform product that stores well and feeds better.

More compact bales are also more cost-effective to handle, wrap and transport.

Form well-shaped bales

Uniform bales improve the effectiveness of the wrapping process.

Keep swaths even and make sure the bale chamber fills consistently.

Well-formed bales will have better shoulders, which improves the seal when wrapping and helps prevent air getting in.

Wrap bales quickly and properly

Wrap bales as soon as possible to preserve quality.

Aim for six layers of high-quality wrap. This improves the fermentation process, reduces dry matter loss and prevents mould growth.

Wrap near the stack

If bales are wrapped in the field, handle them carefully to prevent damage to the film wrap.

It’s important to transport bales as soon as possible, ideally on the same day they are baled, to avoid damage and minimise the risk of spoilage.

Check and maintain bale stacks

Regular checks are essential to maintain silage quality. Repair any damage to the wrap quickly to prevent air getting in, which can lead to spoilage.

Control vermin, as rodents can damage the wrap, and protect the stacks with tyres and nets to protect them from bird damage.

Consider stacking bales in well-drained areas to prevent water accumulation.

Handle and stack with care

Proper handling and stacking of bales help avoid physical damage to the film wrap. Handle bales gently to avoid puncturing or tearing the wrap.

There’s no clear advantage to stacking bales on end, so focus on minimising damage.

Keep records for future improvement

Keeping records of fertiliser applications, cutting dates and wrapping methods can help identify areas for improvement.

Reviewing past seasons’ performance makes it easier to improve decisions and reduce waste over time.
