Another drop for the SPP

Wednesday, 22 September 2021

In the week ending 18 September, the EU-spec SPP decreased by 2.06p on the week before to average 154.31p/kg. This puts the measure 5.49p behind the price for the same week a year ago, but still 1.78p above the five-year average.

Slaughter at GB abattoirs was estimated to be 173,200 head during the week, 4.3% lower than the week before but 6% above the same week a year ago. Carcase weights were 800g heavier than the week before, averaging 89.7kg. This puts average weights 3.4kg heavier than the same week a year ago.

Please note that in the past two months numbers in the SPP sample (which does not include outdoor or within-company traded pigs) have made up a smaller portion of the total kill than usual. We constantly monitor this, and have adjusted the method used to estimate the total weekly slaughter number to take account of this. However, do bear in mind these are estimates. Unusual circumstances can mean the estimated number may not reflect the total GB kill as accurately as usual.

In the week ending 11 September, the EU-spec APP fell by 1.07p from the week before, averaging 161.66p/kg. This puts the measure 2.69p lower than the same week a year ago, but 5.85p above the five-year average. The gap between the APP and SPP narrowed to 5.29p.
