Beef market monthly update – November 2022

Prices
GB deadweight prime cattle prices maintained their year-on-year strength through November, but generally eased week-on-week. This trend largely continued into the first half of December. See our deadweight cattle price webpage for the latest prices.
A similar pattern was recorded in GB deadweight cow prices, posting weekly falls through the month, but remaining significantly elevated on previous years trends.
Costs
Margins for livestock farmers continue to be pressured as prices for key inputs remain at high levels. While the rate of input price inflation has eased slightly since August for fuel and feed according to the latest Agricultural Price Index data, there have been further increases in prices paid for fertilisers.
Production and trade
Monthly UK beef production rose to the highest level for the year during November. This was driven by an increase in throughput of both prime cattle and cows, as carcase weights eased further.
The latest beef trade data for October showed the quantity of fresh and frozen beef exported during the month remained flat year-on-year, while imports were lower year on year.
