Bringing the pork industry together to drive ASF preparedness

Friday, 30 October 2026

The British pig industry is continuing to strengthen its preparedness for African swine fever (ASF) following a series of cross-sector workshops organised by AHDB in early 2026.

The workshops brought together producers, processors, veterinarians, retailers, industry bodies and government representatives to identify risks, agree priorities and consider the actions needed before, during and after a potential ASF outbreak.

The resulting report highlights progress made and areas where further work is needed.

It also reinforces a clear message: effective ASF preparedness relies on industry and government working together.

Six key themes emerged across prevention, response and recovery, including traceability, biosecurity, capacity, practical guidance and trade resilience.

Work is already under way on several of the priorities, including a new ASF economic impact assessment and communications activity aimed at small-scale and rare-breed pig keepers. A pre-designation workshop for processors has also taken place.

Partners will be brought back together next spring to review progress, share learning and continue strengthening the sector’s resilience.

Preparedness is a collective responsibility.

By continuing to work together, we can help reduce the animal welfare, economic and reputational impacts of an ASF outbreak.
