Cattle prices cool as weather heats up
Wednesday, 2 June 2021
Deadweight cattle prices lost ground again in the week ending 29 May. The GB all prime average settled 4.0p lower at 394.0p/kg, returning to levels seen at the beginning of April. Losses were seen across R4Ls and plainer types, steers, heifers and young bulls.
Reports suggest that although demand from catering may be increasing, orders from retailers were perhaps slightly subdued last week. However, hotter weather over the Bank Holiday and a welcome break from the rain will have encouraged people to get outside and start grilling, boosting demand again for cuts suitable for the barbecue.
Estimated prime slaughter in the week was 34,000 head, 200 more than the week before, and 100 head lower than the same week last year.

Cows were not immune from the price declines, giving up 2.3p to average 277.2p/kg. Those meeting the –O4L specification were slightly steadier at 297.1p/kg. Estimated slaughter of cull cows was 10,400 head, also 200 more than the week before.
