Cattle prices hold steady

In the week ending 21 May, the average deadweight prime cattle price was 438.7p/kg, steady on the week previous (+0.1p).
Average prices for heifers and young bulls in the week were up slightly by 0.7p and 1.2p respectively, with the average price for steers marginally easing by 0.5p.
Estimated slaughter stood at 34,500 prime cattle for the week, up 700 head on last week and 1% above year previous levels.

The average deadweight cow price also remained steady on the week previous at 359.4p/kg (-0.4p). The price remains 80p above the same time last year and 104p above the 5-year average. Estimated cow slaughter for the week stood at 9,100 head, down 400 head on last week and 13% behind the same time last year.
