Cattle prices riding high

In the week ending 26 March, the average price for deadweight GB prime cattle increased to 419.8p/kg, up 3.4p on the week before. Cattle prices are currently at their highest since 2014 amongst continuing rises in input costs.
The average weekly price rose in each category, with overall young bulls seeing the biggest increase, up 6.1p to 404.3p/kg.

Estimated prime slaughter for the week ending 26 March was 31,700 head, up 100 head from the previous week, but down 4% on the same time last year. Estimated cow slaughter remained steady at 9,700 head, only 100 head down on the 5-year average for this time.
Cow prices continued their record climb, with another 7p increase on the overall average to 334.0p/kg. Carcases meeting the -O4L specification averaged 353.5p/kg.
