Continued strength in live sheep prices, while deadweight softens

Liveweight sheep prices gained again in the week ending 13 May. The OSL SQQ price went up 5.6p to 212.54p/kg, and the NSL SQQ price increased nearly 8p to average the week at 265.39p/kg.
Overall throughputs at auction marts were 94,500 head, a 10% increase on last week. Within this, the number of old season lambs meeting the SQQ was down by 8% on last week. However, the number of SQQ new season lambs was up by 61%. So, both types of lamb meeting the SQQ were nearly equal in number, at around 33,000 head each. Industry reports also suggested that the number of hoggets is now starting to ease.
Deadweight sheep prices fell in the week ending 9 May. The deadweight OSL SQQ averaged 470.9p/kg, 3p lower than the previous week, and the NSL SQQ price averaged 514.6p/kg, a drop of more than 8p.
