Cull cows £1/kg over the five-year average

In the week ending 2 April, GB deadweight cattle prices experienced more price gains, building on already record prices.
The all-prime average price stood at 426.5p/kg, up another 7p from the week before. This puts the measure up over 30p compared to the same week a year ago, and 72p above on the five-year average.
All types experienced strong price rises, especially young bulls, with the overall measure appreciating by over 10p on the week.

Slaughter of prime cattle was estimated to be 32,400 head, 2.3% more than the previous week. Numbers were 9% ahead of the same week last year, but that week included Good Friday, which would explain some of the difference.
For the year-to-date, estimated prime cattle kill stood at 420,900 head, down 7% on the same period in 2021.
Average GB cull cow prices continued to soar above historic levels. In the week ending 2 April the overall cull cow measure gained 6p to reach 339.9p/kg, up 69p year-on-year, and up by £1/kg on the five-year average price. Those of -O4L spec performed slightly better, up 8p to 361.7p/kg.
Estimated cow kill followed the seasonal downturn, standing at 8,900 head for the week, down 9%. Numbers were up 10% year-on-year, again likely due to the bank holiday last year. For the year-to-date, estimated numbers were down 3% versus the same period in 2021.
