Deadweight cattle prices continue to hold firm

In the week ending 30 January, the GB all prime average cattle price held relatively steady on the week before, down just 0.3p to average 377.0p/kg. This measure remains well above prices seen last year, up 45p when compared to the same week in 2020, and 34p above the five-year average.
Estimated throughput for the week totalled 33,100 head. This is slightly lower than the week before (-200 head) and virtually unchanged on the same week last year, up just 100 head.
Price movements across the prime categories were mixed, with young bulls lifting the most, up almost 3p compared to the previous week.
Weekly price movements for w/e 30 January:
- Steers (overall): 378.1p/kg, up 0.2p
- Steers (R4L): 387.1p/kg, down -0.3p
- Heifers (overall): 377.7p/kg, down -1.2p
- Young bulls (overall): 355.9p/kg, up 2.8p
Cow prices lifted again in the latest week. In the week ending 30 January, the GB average cull cow price rose by 1.5p to average 250.8p/kg. This puts cull cow prices nearly 21p above the same week last year, and 30p above the five-year average. Prices also lifted for those meeting the -O4L specification, up 1.6p on the week before to average 264.2p/kg.
Total cow throughput for the week stood at an estimated 12,100 head, down 800 head (6.5%) compared to the previous week. Estimated slaughter remains above that seen last year, up 800 head compared to the same week in 2020.
