Mixed performance for finished lamb prices

In the week ending 27 May, the GB NSL liveweight lamb price fell back by 18p to average 246.4p/kg, putting the price 10.5p above the same week last year. The OSL measure fell by 16.2p on the week to average 193.7p/kg.
Total throughputs at GB auction marts stood at 99,000 head, down 19% (23,100 head) on last week, likely due in part to the bank holiday. Despite this, throughputs are 5% higher than they were at the same point last year. Within this, NSL throughputs stood at 65,400 head, up 11% (6,700 head) on the week.
Market reports suggest that spring lamb trade eased overall compared to the week before, however demand remained for well-fleshed lambs.
OSL throughputs fell by 47% on the week to 33,600 head, with quality reported as becoming more mixed as numbers fall away.
On the deadweight front, the GB NSL SQQ price rose by 9.5p in the week ending 23 May, to average 545.6p/kg. Estimated clean sheep slaughter stood at 200,900 head, up 6% (11,800 head) on the week, but down 13,500 head on last year. The OSL SQQ price rose 5.2p on the week to average 480.6p/kg.
