EU sheep meat production ticks up in 2021

EU sheep meat production last year totalled 468,000 tonnes, 1% more than in 2020, according to the European Commission. Compared to the five-year average, production was down 1%. The two key points in the calendar for sheep meat production volumes are Easter and Christmas when demand increases.
Spain largely drove the increase in production volumes, with a decline in Irish production largely offset by a rise in output from Greece. There was also a small rise in production in France.
The rise in production is in-line with what the EU short-term outlook forecast in October 2021, although the increase was higher than predicted earlier in the year. The next EU short-term outlook covering expectations for 2022 is due for publication soon.
