GB cattle prices hold strong

In the week ending 7 May, the average price for all prime cattle (steers, heifers and young bulls) sold deadweight in GB added another half a penny from the week before to average 438.9p/kg. This put the measure 33p above the same week a year ago.
Steers and young bulls gained further ground overall, while the overall average heifer price stood-on.

Estimated slaughter of prime cattle in GB totalled 30,000 head during the bank holiday week, down 10% from the (longer) week before. Some reports of plants having issues with staff shortages also potentially affected numbers.
For the year to date, an estimated 570,000 prime cattle have come forward, 6% lower year-on-year.
Meanwhile, the overall average deadweight cow price crept up again, by 0.3p to average 358.5p/kg. This put the measure up 79p versus the same week a year ago.
An estimated 8,700 cows came forward for slaughter in GB abattoirs during the bank holiday week, down 6% from the (longer) week before. In the year-to-date, an estimated 184,000 cows have been sold deadweight, down 2% from the same period a year ago.
For a look at the liveweight markets, overall steers averaged 250.8p/kg in the week ending 7 May, slightly down from the week before but 24p above the same week a year ago. Cull cows stood at 177.2p/kg on average, slightly less than a week before but 36p dearer when compared to this point a year ago. For more detail on auction market prices, click here.
