GB cattle prices stabilise before Christmas

Wednesday, 23 December 2020

By Charlie Reeve

GB prime cattle prices have remained fairly steady over the last week. For the week ending 19 December, the GB all prime average totalled 366.6p/kg, a marginal decrease of just 0.2p on the previous week. The all prime average is currently still up 38p on same week last year and 21p on the five-year average.

Prices have varied between the different prime groups with heifers showing the largest week-on-week price decrease.

  • Steers (overall): 368.1p/kg up 0.3p
  • Steers (R4L): 377.8p/kg down -1.2p
  • Heifers (overall): 366.5p/kg down -1.3p
  • Young bulls (overall): 349.4p/kg up 0.7p

Since the weekend, there have been major disruptions to exports through France. Measures have been put in place to re-open the border today (23 Dec). This is unlikely to have quite as much of an influence on markets as it would for the lamb sector, although it may still have some impact on exported cuts of beef.

Cull cow prices have shown more promise over the last week with prices rising up by 1.7p on the previous week to total 223.4p/kg for the week ending 19 December. This now puts the cull cow prices up 18p on the same week last year.

Estimated prime slaughter dropped back slightly for the week totalling 34,500 head, a decrease of 600 head on the week before, however still 300 head up on the same week last year. The estimated cull cow throughput increased 800 head on the previous week to total 13,100 head.
