GB lamb prices follow seasonal trends
Thursday, 28 July 2022
In the week ending 27 July, the GB NSL liveweight SQQ averaged 248.24p/kg, down 40p from the previous week. Despite the slip, the measure is in line with where it was at the same point a year ago, and still 43p above the five-year average.
We would expect lamb prices to come under some pressure at this time of year, in line with seasonal trends, as more animals come to market. Reports suggest that price pressure was widespread, with lamb quality reported as being variable, affected by lack of grass.
Throughput at GB auction markets was estimated to be 99,800 head for the week, up 13% from the previous week but down 14% from the same week a year ago.
Cull ewes averaged £95.44/head during the week, down almost £7 from the previous week.
On the deadweight front, the GB NSL SQQ lost 16.6p on the previous week to average 622.5p/kg in the week ending 23 July. This remains 62p up on the same week a year ago. An estimated 167,500 lambs were processed during the week, down 9% from the previous week.
