GB lamb prices hold their ground

Thursday, 4 March 2021

In the week ending 3 March, the liveweight OSL SQQ maintained its strength, gaining over 2p on last week’s price, to average 279.94p/kg.

Throughputs at British auction markets increased compared to numbers in the previous week, up a further 2% to nearly 105,000 head. This number is slightly behind the market throughputs in the same week last year.

Cull ewe prices for the week averaged £84.22/head, up more than £3.50 compared to the previous week, and numbers were down slightly.

Deadweight prices also gained further ground. In the week ending 27 February, the deadweight OSL SQQ rose by just under 5p to average 613.9p/kg. Estimated slaughter for the week totalled 194,400 head, 1% (2,000 head) lower than last week, and 9,000 head (4.5%) lower than the same week last year.

To put the deadweight prices above in context, in the week ending 21 February the French reference price for heavy lambs was £6.03/kg, while its GB equivalent was £6.09/kg. Supplies are reported to have been relatively tight on the continent, which has in turn been a driving force behind price movements here. However, more recently, prices in France have been falling. If this continues, in conjunction with any further weakening in the Euro/GB exchange rate, it could spell weakness for the GB market.
