GB lamb prices still on the up

In the week ending 13 February, the GB deadweight OSL SQQ rose by nearly 13p to average 593.3p/kg. Prices continue to run well above the five-year average and are 71p higher when compared to the same week last year. Despite reports of difficulties in exporting, demand for lambs here and for carcases on the continent is reported to be strong, against a tight supply-side picture. Without an erosion in demand, prices could continue to receive support for some weeks.

Total throughputs for the week are estimated at 198,000 head, on a par with last week, and 6% short of the figure in the same week last year. In the year to date, nearly 8% fewer lambs have come forward compared to the same point in 2020.

The liveweight OSL SQQ increased by more than 8p on the previous week to average 279.74p/kg in the week ending 17 February. Auction market throughputs totalled 98,100 head, down 1% on the same week last year. Cull ewes for the week averaged £80.19/head, up nearly £5 from the previous week.
