GB milk deliveries: December milk production remains in strong growth
Thursday, 16 January 2025
GB milk deliveries in December totalled 1,054 million litres, up 3.3% compared to the same period in 2023. Deliveries averaged at 34 million litres per day.
Production for this year’s milk season far (April-December) has totalled 9,333 million litres, a 0.7% increase compared to the same period in 2023 and 2.5% above the 5-year average for December production. After a challenging start to the year, deliveries have shown year-on-year growth since September.
Despite significant rainfall, the Met Office reported mild temperatures in December. The effects of the cold snap in early January could be reflected in next month’s delivery data.
Milk price announcements have held firm for the start of 2025, continuing to push efforts towards greater milk production. Although the milk to feed price ratio has been favourable, industry commentary suggests that lower quality silage may also be increasing reliance on supplementary feed.
The GB milk production forecast for the 2024/25 season predicts continuation of the production growth, with 0.9% forecasted for the overall season, versus the previous milk year.
