H5N1 identified in single sheep in Yorkshire

Monday, 24 March 2025

This morning (24 March), the UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer confirmed a case of influenza of avian origin (H5N1) in a single sheep in Yorkshire.

Farms where mammals and poultry are both present should pay particular attention to biosecurity, although currently there is no need to take additional specific precautions.

However, this is an opportunity for all farmers to review their biosecurity measures.

  • Keep as much distance as possible between mammals and poultry
  • Maintain good handwashing practices and make sure to wash and disinfect equipment going on farm
  • Any farm workers with signs of influenza should stay away from livestock and poultry

Farmer cooperation is vital in disease outbreak situations.

The quicker animals can be tested, the sooner the virus can be contained and restrictions lifted.

Speak to your vet if you have any unexplained deaths, have concerns about your animals or want to know the signs to look out for.

Movement of farm mammals within avian influenza protection and surveillance zones must be done with appropriate Defra licences.

There is no evidence that meat from affected animals is at risk, but proper handling and cooking is appropriate.
