Help train the next generation of the pig industry

Sunday, 4 June 2023

Rattlerow Farms Ltd. has been involved with the Pig Industry Scholarship Programme (PISP) since its launch. To date, they have hired five students, each on a year-long placement from Harper Adams University.

Joshua Overend (BSc/BSc Hons Agriculture with Animal Science) is the latest student to join the business, and starts his placement this month.

Nick Lawson, Rattlerow’s HR manager, explains:

“We like students to come from a pig background if possible. I am particularly interested in those studying agriculture and animal science as this helps with their understanding of genetics, which is important to us.

“Their placement consists of a complete circuit of the business, working across the nucleus, AI studs, GMUs and multiplication sites, ending with a six-month stint on one of our commercial units to fully understand all aspects of our business.”

As part of the programme, students must complete a project that provides commercial value to the business. Previous topics at Rattlerow have included carbon emission audits and gilt retention.

“I am very supportive of PISP as I am keen to encourage more people to work in the pig industry. It is vital that we train the next generation of pig farmers and develop a great base from which to hire future employees.”

If you are keen to develop and recruit future talent, now is the time to get involved. We are coordinating the recruitment of sponsoring businesses alongside Harper Adams University Development Trust, and welcome interest from all areas of the supply chain.

The deadline to become a sponsor during 2024/25 is Monday 4 September 2023; placements will start in summer 2024.
