Lamb prices head upwards as we head towards Christmas

Christmas lamb kill is now well under way, and has brought another increase to an already buoyant price. In the week ended 1 December the GB liveweight NSL SQQ gained 7.9p, to 277.47p/kg. Compared to year earlier levels, prices this year now carry a 60p premium. Throughputs for the week picked up on last week’s levels, but remained low for the time of year at 120,400 head.
Prices do usually feel some upwards pressure in the weeks running up to Christmas, as peak kill tails off and demand increases. This year that peak kill didn’t really happen. Demand is unlikely to have made any major changes, but the supplies from New Zealand have been suppressed due to Covid-19 and its impact on the shipping industry. This is impacting on both the British and European markets. Some industry reports have suggested there has also been a rise in export demand, perhaps due to a lack of New Zealand product.
During the week ending 27 November the GB deadweight NSL SQQ record little movement, standing at 600.6p/kg. Estimated kill for the week totalled 233,100 head, down 3% and 22% on the week and on the year respectively.
