Live lamb prices ease, while deadweight gains

Liveweight lamb prices eased back during the week ending 20 May, following strong gains in the previous week. The GB NSL SQQ price fell by just over a penny to average 264.36p/kg, while the OSL SQQ fell by 2.67p on the week to average 209.87p/kg.
Total auction mart throughputs were up 29% on the week, at 122,100 head. Within this, NSL SQQ throughputs rose 68% on the week to 54,600 head, while OSL SQQ throughputs rose 14% on the week to 38,500 head. The previous week was shorter however, due to the VE day bank holiday.
Deadweight prices gained however, in the week ending 16 May. The OSL SQQ rose by 4.5p on the week to average 475.4p/kg, while the NSL SQQ price climbed by 21.5p to average 536.1p/kg. Estimated slaughter stood at 189,100 head, up 6% (9,900 head) on the week, but down 10% on the same week last year. Reports suggest that the upcoming celebrations marking the end of Ramadan this weekend have supported demand, especially for hoggets.
