Liveweight and deadweight lamb prices diverge

Finished hogget prices recorded differing movements; liveweight prices were steady to slightly softer, while deadweight prices increased. Demand is likely to be lower overall, due to foodservice closures and a reported lack of export demand.
During the week ending 6 May, the GB liveweight OSL SQQ fell almost 3p on-the-week, to 206.97p/kg. The NSL quote rose 12p, to 257.44p/kg, having dropped sharply last week. Throughputs for the week dropped by 10,000 head overall, to 86,200 head. The mix of lamb ages coming through during the week reflected the changeover in crop at this time of year; new season lamb numbers picked up, while old season lamb numbers declined. Numbers forward are likely to be subdued in the coming weeks as the industry makes this change between hoggets and lambs.
In the week ended 2 May, the GB deadweight OSL SQQ increased 10p, to 473.8p/kg. The NSL equivalent rose 7p, to 523p/kg. Estimated kill for the week was down 20,000 head week-on-week, to 167,300 head, low compared to this time last year.
