Liveweight lamb prices move up

Liveweight lamb prices have picked back up somewhat this week, with the number being marketed remaining relatively low. The liveweight NSL SQQ averaged 227.2p/kg in the week ended 29 September, up 9p on the previous week. Numbers forward were a little higher than the previous week at 103,400 head, though this is still nearly 20% below last year.
The England June census results indicate there may well be fewer lambs on the ground, but possibly not few enough to explain the lower slaughter numbers to date entirely. Even so, relatively low slaughter numbers could be an ongoing trend for a while. If this were the case, this would help maintain the firmness in the market.
Conversely, in the week ended 25 September, the deadweight SQQ continued to fall, dropping by over 14p on the week to 494.0p/kg. There was a little uplift in estimated slaughter compared to the previous week, totalling 242,500 head. This was still nearly 10% less than last year. Despite the decline, prices are still well above the 5-year average for the time of year.
