Prime cattle prices tick up for Jubilee weekend

The average deadweight all prime cattle price stood at 440.0p/kg in the week ending 4 June, up 1.8p on the week previous, just in time for the Jubilee celebrations. All categories saw an increase this week with young bulls up almost 3p overall and steers and heifers up almost 2p on the week.

With the double bank holiday, it was a very short working week, therefore estimated slaughter stood at 26,500 head, down almost 9,000 head from the week before.

The average price for cull cows eased in the week ending 4 June, dropping 1.6p to 360.5p/kg. Current cow prices are still at record highs, sitting over 100p/kg more than the 5-year average. Due to the extra short week, estimated slaughter stood at 6,900 head, a drop of over 2,000 head from the week before.
