Small uptick in lamb prices amongst plentiful supplies
Thursday, 24 March 2022
Liveweight lamb prices picked up in the week ending 23 March. The OSL SQQ stood at 262.08p/kg, up nearly 3p from the week before. Supplies currently appear to be plentiful, with auction market throughputs reaching 115,600 head, 13% higher than they were at the same time last year. This time last year, suplies were especially tight as lambs were finished early as a precaution to the potential of a ‘hard Brexit’.
Deadweight lamb prises rose by 1.8p in the week, with the OSL SQQ at 566.9p/kg week ending 19 March. Carcases in the R3L category remained steady at 570.4p/kg. Despite prices being over 70p down on the same time last year, they are almost 60p above the 5-year average.
Estimated slaughter was again strong this week at 226,700 head, demonstrating good availability, up 2% from the week previous and up 14% compared to the same time last year.
Prices for cull ewes through markets rose again to £107.46/head, up £3.05 on the week previous.
Key demand dates coming up:

- Easter April 17th
- Eid Al-Adha begins July 9th
