UK beef shipments remain higher in August
Wednesday, 20 October 2021
Trade of beef remained in year-on-year growth in August, according to data from HMRC.
Imports
The UK imported 21,000 tonnes of fresh and frozen beef in August, 5% greater than July and 16% above the same month a year ago.
A 17% increase in Irish shipments were behind the majority of the annual uplift. Volumes increased from several other smaller European suppliers, including the Netherlands and Spain. South American volumes also rose. Less beef came in from Poland and Germany.
For the year-to-date (Jan-Aug), fresh and frozen beef imports were 2% below those of the same period a year ago, at 142,000 tonnes.
Exports
Nearly 9,000 tonnes of beef was shipped out of the UK during August, 7% below that recorded in July, but 7% above volumes for August last year.
Shipments to non-EU countries showed notable uplift, while volumes to the EU were 0.5% lower than a year ago. Volumes to the Philippines and Iran showed particularly strong increases. Within EU volumes, shipments increased the most to France, which partially outweighed lower volumes sent to the Netherlands, Italy and Ireland.
For the year-to-date, the UK exported 63,500 tonnes of fresh and frozen beef, down 18% year-on-year.
