Table Talk - Replacement Heifers: Setting the foundation for a profitable suckler herd

Past Event

Wednesday, 23 September 2020

7:30pm - 9:00pm

Join AHDB Beef and Lamb for a live chat with Seth Wareing, Business Development Manager for Stabiliser Cattle Co. and Paul Westaway, Gloucestershire Beef Farmer with a pedigree herd of Aberdeen Angus (Melview Angus) and Murray Greys (Melview Murray Grey).

Heifer replacements set the foundation for a profitable suckler herd, but are often overlooked until they join the breeding herd. By this point their genetics have set the ceiling on their productive potential and no matter how they are subsequently managed through the rest of their lives, they will never exceed the genetics they were born with.

During this event, we will speak with Seth and Paul about the theory of breeding heifer replacements and how this can be practically implemented on farm to maximise their future profitability in the herd.

We will investigate what makes a profitable suckler cow, how much influence genetics have on female productivity and the value of selecting the correct maternal genetics for your herd. We will then look at the traits of importance when breeding female replacements, how to select for those traits and how to build them into your replacement breeding strategy to ensure your female replacements are born with the genetics that enable them to contribute to the overall productivity and profitability of the suckler herd.

This will be an interactive event, so have your questions around breeding female replacements to hand to ask our speakers as we go.

Please note after booking, in addition to the confirmation email, you will receive a booking link on the day to attend the online event.
