A sector united for pig health and welfare

Tuesday, 13 January 2026

Reflecting on some of the challenges faced by the pig industry during 2023/24, it’s important to also recognise the resilience, innovation and collaboration that continue to define it. In the latest Pig Health and Welfare Council (PHWC) biennial report, we’ve explored some of the key activities the council helped coordinate to protect and enhance pig health and welfare.

During 2023/24, the PHWC, which includes representatives from across the pig industry, focused on strengthening disease surveillance and control, improving farm biosecurity and supporting responsible use of veterinary medicines, particularly antimicrobial stewardship.

This latest report outlines the work undertaken to monitor and manage endemic diseases and prepare for exotic threats, such as African swine fever, including:

  • Enhanced data collection
  • Horizon scanning
  • Contingency planning

It also highlights improvements in on-farm welfare – from reduced tail docking and tail biting to refined farrowing accommodation, better environmental enrichment and stockmanship training.

Looking ahead, the council will continue to reinforce the message that high health and welfare standards drive productivity, resilience and the long-term reputation of British pig production.

The council’s priorities include:

  • Remaining vigilant for emerging diseases
  • Harnessing data and digital tools to support on-farm decision making
  • Ensuring policy and support schemes align with producers’ needs

Continued collaboration among the group and wider industry will be essential to manage risk, support farm businesses through change and demonstrate leadership on welfare to consumers at home and overseas.

The PHWC will continue to ensure that the UK pig industry remains resilient, sustainable and aligned with the highest standards of animal health and welfare.
