Environmental Permitting Regulations reporting requirements

Thursday, 15 January 2026

Farms permitted under the Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR) must complete retrospective nitrogen and phosphorus reporting for 2025 by the end of February. If this affects you, the tools below should make it easier for you to calculate your figures.

If you’re a permit holder, you can use one of the Environment Agency’s mass balance calculators to work out how much nitrogen and phosphorus were excreted from your farm last year.

Zanita Markham, AHDB’s Sustainability and Engagement Manager (Pork), explains:

“The Environment Agency has considered producer feedback from the previous year’s reporting window and has updated the calculators.

“They’ve also recorded video tutorials to improve reporting accuracy across different systems.”

To use the calculators, you’ll need some key details, including:

  • Number of pigs/poultry
  • Diet types
  • Protein and phosphorus levels in the diets
  • Amount of feed used during the year

Once you’ve input your data, the calculator will tell you how many kilograms of nitrogen and phosphorus were excreted per pig place per year, which you can submit to the Environment Agency.

If your results exceed their limits, we recommend consulting your nutritionist to explore options.

If you’ve got questions about what you need to report, get in touch with Zanita or the Environment Agency.
