Great British Calf Week returns with a focus on driving progress through data and knowledge sharing

Great British Calf Week returns on 10 September, focusing on how using data can help inform decisions on farm and within the supply chain.

Coordinated by AHDB and The Calf Action Network (CAN), the week will kick off with UK Dairy Day and feature a range of events led by stakeholders across the industry, including webinars, farm walks and on-farm activities focusing on topics such as genetics, calf health and maximising calf value.

Karl Pendlebury, AHDB Engagement Manager Beef & Lamb, said:

"Now in its fourth year, it’s great to be collaborating with stakeholders across the industry including farmers, vets and other organisations such as Ben Strugnell of Farm Post Mortems Ltd to share knowledge around the importance of ensuring all calves are reared with care and purpose.

“During the week we will champion the progress industry has made and provide farmers with the latest information to improve their calf management systems. The week will include a broad range of topics including respiratory disease, environmental footprint and using genetics to produce market-ready carcases."

Catherine Carlton, Livestock Project Assistant at Innovation for Agriculture and co-ordinator of CAN, said:

"We’re excited to be a part of GB calf week and bring together members of the Calf Action Network to host some exciting events. The network includes calf rearers, vets, industry experts and researchers, who will be able to share knowledge and showcase best practice in rearing calves.

"Our focus is on prioritising calf health and welfare, which in turn drives profitability for farmers. The calf week events offer a fantastic opportunity for the industry to connect, learn and inspire one another.

"Throughout the week, events will be held covering the full rearing process, from newborn care to weaning and beyond, exploring the latest research, innovative practices and real-world case studies.

"The aim is to spark conversation, encourage collaboration and promote efficient, welfare-focused approaches to calf rearing across the industry."
