Prime cattle prices drop back week-on-week but remain up on year

In the week ending 13 February, the GB all prime average cattle price dropped down by 2.4p on the previous week to average 374.4p/kg. The measure is now above the price achieved for the same week last year by 41.1p/kg.
Estimated throughput for the week totalled 34,300 head. This is 1,200 head lower than the week before but still up on the same week last year by 1,500 head.
There were downward price movements across all of the major prime categories this week, with steers showing the largest week-on-week decline
GB cattle prices by category for the week ending 13 February and week-on-week changes:
- Steers (overall): 375.1p/kg down -2.9p
- Steers (R4L): 383.5p/kg down -3.7p
- Heifers (overall): 375.0p/kg down -1.7p
- Young bulls (overall): 355.4p/kg down -2.1p

Cull cow prices have shown more promise over the last week with prices rising up by 2.6p on the previous week to total 253p/kg for the week ending 13 February. This now puts the cull cow prices up 20.6p on the same week last year. Estimated cull cow throughput was down notably by 1,500 head (13%) on the previous week to total 10,200 head.
