Leadership is like farming – there’s more than one way to cultivate success.

We've partnered with the Nuffield International Farming Network (Brasil) for this inspiring Talking Leaders livestream. We'll explore how leaders from around the world tackle familiar challenges in different ways.

Our guests, who will share their thoughts on different leadership styles, are:

  • Carla Borges
  • Wynoma Michaels
  • Izak van Heerden

The broadcast will be hosted by Julia Cristina Campos and Max MacGillivray.

Join us to hear how diverse backgrounds and cultures can influence leadership styles, and see what you can take away to implement in your business.

Guests

Carla Borges

Carla is a Brazilian farmer and 2017 Nuffield Scholar. Following her Nuffield programme, she brought innovation to her family’s business by pioneering the cultivation of speciality grains in her region. As one of the first to adopt this approach, she has since inspired other local farmers to follow suit.

Carla now leads a team and has established an export business, exporting not only her own products but also supporting other farmers in the region.

She has become a key figure in driving agricultural progress and collaboration in her area.

Dr Wynoma Michaels

Wynoma brings a wealth of experience from across various sectors, with a recent focus on agriculture.

Although obtaining a PhD in polymer chemistry, she decided to follow her passion for people and their potential by helping businesses and their leaders through consultancy work.

Wynoma’s extensive background includes supporting businesses on strategic planning and stakeholder engagement, and helping farmers and agricultural businesses align their operations with sustainability goals.

She has worked with commercial agriculture as a board member of KAL Group, and has been involved in sustainable farming initiatives.

Wynoma has also collaborated with organisations such as the Knowledge Hub for Organic Agriculture and the Deciduous Fruit Development Chamber, focusing on transformation and sustainability in the sector.

Izak van Heerden

Izak is a 2023 Nuffield Farming Scholar and his study topic is AgriLeadership for tomorrow’s world.

He leads the AgriLeader programme at AHDB, steering delivery related to people, including leadership and management. He also leads on insights for AHDB, looking at the social science of how to bring about behavioural change on farm.

Izak hails from an extensive sheep and beef farm in Mzansi (South Africa), and studied agriculture before settling in East Sussex (UK) two decades ago.

Julia Cristina Campos

Julia is a lawyer and cattle farmer. She succeeds her father and is now responsible for the management of the farm, transforming it from a family farm into a business.

She participated on the biggest youth agricultural leadership programme in Brazil, the CNA Jovem, where she was one of the finalists out of 2,000 participants.

Julia is also the executive support of Nuffield Brazil's operations and is involved in leadership groups and events throughout Brazil.

Max MacGillivray

Max is the founder of Beanstalk.Global, a social enterprise that supports, educates and promotes the global fresh food industry to help it thrive and grow faster.

Having recorded well over 100 broadcasts with key industry professionals and national and international businesses, it is a wide-reaching platform that continues to grow and inspire.

Max also chairs and speaks at a wide range of annual conferences and industry events.
