Video: Why is pork demand struggling?

Pork and pig meat products have struggled in retail. Volumes have seen continual decline over the last 18 months, but why are consumers switching away?

There were three key results:

  • Pork is seen as less tasty than beef and lamb and harder to cook than beef or chicken
  • Despite being one of the cheaper proteins in supermarkets, retail prices have risen faster than some of the other proteins and in particular chicken where the price gap has widened
  • Pork has seen growth in the foodservice market, but because over 86% of pork volumes are through retail, overall demand is in decline
