GB finished pig prices edge up

The EU-spec SPP gained ground in the week ending 18 April. Prices averaged 164.00p/kg, 0.37p more than in the previous week. This puts prices almost 27p above the five-year average.

Despite the latest week also including a bank holiday, throughputs increased by 4% (6,100 head) on the week. Nevertheless, this remains around 7,000 head below the average for this week when excluding those affected by Easter bank holidays.

Industry reports suggest that markets remained relatively steady. Reports also continue to indicate tighter supplies. This is probably partly seasonal, coupled with previous pulling pigs forward and some historical production challenges.

Average carcase weights picked up a little on last week, gaining 210g to average 85.19kg. This pushed the average weight over 600g above a year ago.

In the week ending 11 April, the EU-spec APP continued to gain ground, averaging 166.44p/kg. With the SPP moving in the opposite direction in the same week, the gap between the two measures widened to 2.81p. This is the largest gap between the two since July last year.

Weaner markets moved in opposing directions in the week ending 18 April. 7kg weaner prices decreased by 70p, to average £42.77/head. In contrast, 30g weaners moved up by almost £3.00 to average £61.75/head.
